Tanatan - Old world charm. Inventive food.
Tanatan at Reagent palace hotel, Bur Dubai situated opposite
to Burjuman offers a feast of Indian delicacies embodying the diversity and
flamboyance of the country. Spicy aromas and mouth-watering flavors govern the
culinary spead and it reflect the traditions and festivity of Indian cuisine.
Ambiance
The place looks classic with a relaxed vibe, mood lit
interiors, traditional paintings of the maharajas, large and small sized bells
in different corners and a centre stage where the live performance takes place
on most days.
The Food
For the starts we had Aamchi Tanatan, a spicy prawn
preparation and Murgh Bharwaan Lahori. Both pleased the tastebuds.
The dish I am referring to is Bambil sandwich –
which is no regular sandwich but a layer of prawns paste stuffed in the middle
of fish, coated outside with ravioli and fried. Thanks to the use of semolina it
does add on to some level of crispiness however the fish inside is soggy and
the paste didn’t hit the right spot in terms of taste I expected.
For the mains I ordered Lamb Biryani while my dining partner
went with Chicken chukka and appam. The biryani obviously took some time to be
prepared and in the meanwhile my dining partners order arrived. Hungry and
tempted seeing the hot and lovely appams, I dug into the chukka with a fold of
appam. The chicken chukka had a great portion
of coconut, where I was actually expecting onion. Nevertheless it appealed to the
gustatory senses.
The grand finale was when my Biryani arrived complete with
its trimmings and a diya below the steel handi to keep the dish warm throughout
my indulgence. The biryani as flavorful, rich with all the Indian spices and
had decent portions of tender, juicy and luscious lamb marinated in Indian spices
and soaked in rice. The flavour of the lamb was seeped deeply into the rice and
made it a totally aromatic biryani affair.
In desserts we had Matka rabdi with gulab jamun and badam
pista firni. Both were average or below for I would expect a speciality Indian restaurant
which is famous in india to be masters at these two very basic and popular Indian
desserts.
In terms of cocktails they had a few interesting versions. I
tried paan ki shaan and imli goli shots. Paan ki shaan was pleasant to drink
and had very less of alcohol content. It tasted more like Paan smoothie but then
this is precisely what I wanted.
Verdict
The ambiance is very relaxed and the lighting kind of sets
the tone for the milieu. The live band dishes out popular Bollywood numbers.
Their singing cant be rated as outstanding but something is better than
nothing. Their biryanis and curries are
good in the main course, however there are many hits and a few misses in the
appetizers – this is judging by the Bambli. Service is tad slow and if this could be improved it will do a great deal of good for the restaurant.
